Hi. You’re welcome, and thanks for the compliment! I sympathize with you! Been there, still doing that! (See my redivorce/undivorce post and I’m gonna enter a new blog post soon on what’s going on now. You wouldn’t believe it if you heard it!) Anyway, what you need to do is get a good lawyer that has experience in dealing with “difficult” soon-to-be-ex spouses. I am not a lawyer, but I’ve been through years of dealing with an “N”. You will have to interview a few! They are hard to come by. I believe many lawyers/judges have NPD themselves so they don’t see what’s going on as being harmful to the child. That’s been my experience anyway. What is your wife trying to do? Full custody? You’re in luck because many states now try to get the child custody as close as 50/50 as possible. I know if you did the majority of the care, that’s heartbreaking. Done that! And with a N, they’ll lie to get what they want. You need to try to communicate with her and get things in writing. However, be careful she doesn’t get anything she can use against YOU. Always appear respectful, never yell, never say anything about the divorce or your ex in front of your son. I left a year before the time that it “stuck”. That was never mentioned. I took her with me when I left but I let him see her. There was nothing he could do about it. Most likely, they’ll look at who cared for your son the last two years. Get evidence, ppl who knew, day care, child care, etc. She will lie! She will lie when you don’t think she will! Be prepared. Have documents to back EVERYTHING up! Save everything involving her. You never know what you’re going to end up having to use! Best of luck. If you have more specific questions, please feel free to reply!

I never knew of this personality disorder until recently, and struggle to even think how to prove she has NPD. We have previously gone through court for custody of my son who has been in my primary care since the age of six months, but never finalised the orders as she manipulated me to believe she had changed and I fell for it coming from a broken family my self and didn’t want that for my son! I am worried as to how it will go the second time round knowing that things were actually going so well for me the first time, with the way things were going it seemed I would have got the custody. But feel so stupid to believe her and allow her to manipulate me out of my sheer empathy of knowing what it would be like for my son to be raised in a broken family. I soon realised after I made the decision to take her word that her intentions were false promises and seemed calculated! It seems She cares more about getting revenge on me than her son knowing that she wasn’t going to get what she wanted ! I can’t help but feel if I was more educated I wouldn’t have put my self through this again or allowed her to do it to me again! Will this affect me if we go through court a second time? Also thank you for some great advice on this page.
